EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) tallied a game-high 22 points to lead all scorers as the Chicago State men's basketball team dropped a close battle this evening to host Northwestern by a score of 68-64 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
 
Sims, Jr. connected on seven of his 13 attempts from three-point range while adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals in playing all 40 minutes.
 
NU posted an early 7-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game before the Green and White later responded with three pointers from senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) and Sims, Jr. which evened the score at 9-9 at the 10:56 mark. The home team then used an 18-4 scoring run that lasted nearly eight minutes to reclaim the lead at 27-14 before CSU closed the half by scoring seven on the next nine points to pull within 29-21 at intermission.
 
The Wildcats opened the second stanza with a 10-4 scoring run through the first three-plus minutes to bring their lead to 39-25 following a jumper from Vic Law at the 16:36 mark. Chicago State would ride the hot hand of Sims, Jr. as he tallied 13 points as part of a 27-13 scoring drive over an eight-minute span to claim its first lead of the contest at 52-50 that concluded on a dunk by Palmer with 8:06 remaining.
 
After NU scored a quick 9-2 in a less than five minutes to regain its advantage at 59-52 with 3:18 left, CSU then scored six unanswered points to slice its deficit to 59-58 at 2:17 when sophomore Anthony Eaves (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) canned a mid-range jumper. The hosts then closed out the game by scoring nine of the final 15 points to earn the victory.
 
CSU (3-7) held advantages over Northwestern in rebounds (40-33), steals (6-4), points off turnovers (8-7) and bench points (20-11) for the contest.
 
Palmer recorded his third consecutive double-double after scoring 18 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to shooting 7-of-13 from the field and connected on 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Eaves produced season highs of 12 points and five rebounds to go along with notching a career-best two blocked shots.
 
Like CSU, Northwestern (8-2) also had three player score in double figures with Law leading the team with 18 points, while Bryant McIntosh contributed 14 points and a game-high seven assists.
 
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday afternoon with another city battle against DePaul at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The game is the first for both teams in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 beginning at 1 p.m.
