CSU Game Notes

CHICAGO -

OPENING TIP – The Chicago State men's basketball team continues its month-long, 12-game road swing with a Chicago Five battle against rival UIC Wednesday night at the UIC Pavilion on ESPN3 with a start time of 7 p.m.

SCOUTING CSU – Chicago State enters the week sporting a 2-3 season record after kicking off its road swing last Saturday with a 91-60 loss at Notre Dame.  The Cougars have three players that are averaging double figure scoring, led by sophomore guard Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale), with 18.8 points per game, while senior guard/forward Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) is grabbing a team-leading seven rebounds a game to go along with scoring 13.8 points per contest. Senior guard Clemmye Owens V (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) is averaging 13.2 points a game, and junior guard Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) is recording team highs of five assists and 1.8 steals per game.

SCOUTING UIC – UIC brings a 3-3 season record into Wednesday's game after posting a 2-2 mark last week in the Northern Illinois Thanksgiving Classic with wins over NAIA member Trinity Christian (102-66) and Cal Poly (84-71) and losses to Elon (91-80) and the host Huskies (92-81). Like CSU, UIC also has three players averaging double digit points with sophomore forward Dikembe Dixson producing team highs of 25.2 points, seven rebounds and two steals per game while shooting 54 percent from the field and 44 percent from downtown. Junior forward/center Tai Odiase is recording a team-best 3.2 blocked shots a game and shooting 63 percent from the field in addition to averaging 11.7 points per game. Freshman guard Godwin Boahen is dishing out a team-leading 2.3 assists per contest.

SERIES HISTORY – Chicago State has produced a 34-26 advantage in the all-time series with UIC, but Wednesday's game will be the first regular-season meeting since the 2006-07 season. The two teams last met on the hardwood during the first round of the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament in CSU's first Division I postseason appearance on March 13, 2013 when the Flames captured an 80-69 victory at the UIC Pavilion. Matt Ross led the Green and White in the game with 19 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

PALMER'S 30-PIECE SPECIAL – Palmer was on fire in last Tuesday's game against East-West as he set a new career scoring high with 34 points on 16-of-20 shooting from the field and connected two of his three attempts from three-point range. His previous scoring high was 30 points at Grand Canyon during the 2014-15 season. Palmer is the only the second Cougar that has eclipsed the 30-point total joining Carl Montgomery (35 points at Houston Baptist – 2/3/11).

STRIVING FOR NO. 1 – Palmer looks to place his name as one of the school's best offensive rebounders in the program's D-I era as he's currently second on CSU's career offensive rebounds list as he has produced 156 o-boards to rank second behind Montgomery's total of 214.

STRIVING FOR NO. 1…PART TWO – CSU head coach Tracy Dildy needs two wins to become the program's record holder for most Division I coaching wins heading to Notre Dame. Dildy has amassed 48 career wins and is just one victory behind legendary Cougar bench boss Bob Hallberg (49) to tie the record.

UP NEXT – CSU continues its road swing on Saturday afternoon in downstate Macomb as it takes on rival Western Illinois in an ESPN3 live broadcast at Western Hall with the opening tip set for 2 p.m.
