Complete Results LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Chicago State women's tennis saw their 2013-14 season come to an end on Friday (April 25) in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a 4-2 loss to Kansas City.
The Cougars started play strong by taking the doubles point. Freshman
Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and sophomore
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) made quick work of Gaby Pintos and Maddie Schulte 8-1 at No. 2. Sophomore
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) and freshman
Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) fell to Raquel Argenal and Linda Ammar Mouhoub to even up doubles play. It came down to the play at No. 1 doubles and freshman
Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) and senior
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) topped Dimitra Stavriankou and Amelie Amsallem 8-5 for the win to clinch the doubles point.
Chicago State's good fortune didn't continue in singles play. The only match the Cougars won in singles play was at No. 5. Huckabee defeated Amsallem 6-4, 6-1. At No. 4, Lloyd lost to Argenal 6-0, 6-1. Emeralda fell at No. 3 to Mariam Kurasbediani 6-3, 6-2. Play at No. 2 and No. 6 singles competition went the distance. Pangestu lost to Schulte 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 2 and Perez-Ochoa fell to Mouhoub at No. 6 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 to give Kansas City the victory. Utech and Dimitra Stavriankou were in the third set of their No. 1 match when the No. 6 singles contested ended thus Utech's contest went unfinished.
Kansas City improves to 7-13 and will face Idaho in the semifinals on Saturday.
Chicago State finishes their inaugural season in the WAC 8-17.
