HTML BoxHomewood, Ill. - The Chicago State women's tennis team scored a 7-0 victory over the Valparaiso Crusaders on Monday (April 13) at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club.
The team honored senior
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) before the match. In the last home match of her career, Emeralda won in doubles with partner freshman
Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) 8-1 over Michele Fredlake and Angelina Goheen. The senior's 37 career doubles victories ranks fifth in program history.
Head coach
Jack Barton discussed the effect that Emeralda had on the program.
"I know how lucky I was to have a player like her," said the fourth-year head coach. "Karyn is such a positive influence and her impact on the team will last a long time. She has made us a better team each year with her leadership on and off the court."
In singles, freshman
Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) and sophomore
Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) did not drop a game, winning their matches 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Paige Heuer. Freshman
Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Megan Barthels. Freshman
Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) defeated Kristin Zakiewicz 6-1, 6-3 while sophomore
Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) won 6-2, 6-2 over Morgan Paras.
During doubles play, Utech and Yusta upended Zakiewicz and Kaitlyn Hamel 8-1 while Huckabee and Lloyd dropped an 8-7 (8-6) decision to Heuer and Barthels.
Chicago State improved their record 8-16 on the season while Valparaiso's record dropped to 2-19. The Cougars have finished the regular season portion of their schedule and head to Las Cruces, N.M. to finish the year at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament (April 25-27).
