CSU Women's Tennis Picks Up 4-2 Decision Over NIU

Homewood, Ill.  – The Chicago State women's tennis team took down the Northern Illinois Huskies 4-2 at Homewood- Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club on Thursday evening (March 6) to pick up their fourth win of the season.

Freshman Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) fought off a match point in the second set to come back and defeat Arantza De La Torre 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. Huckabee's victory was her 10th of the year and clinched the match for Cougars.

Sophomore Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) won 6-4, 6-1 over Mary Malkin for her eighth victory of the year. She leads the team with seven singles wins in the spring.  

In other singles action, senior Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) also took home a victory with a 7-6, 6-1 decision over Haley Dekkinga.  Freshman Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) fell 7-6, 6-3 to Nelle Youel. Sophomore Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Cristina Alvarez. Freshman Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) was up 6-3, 6-7, 3-2 over Maria Rozo, but their match went unfinished as the Cougars had clinched the victory.

CSU also picked up the doubles point by taking two of the three doubles matches. Utech and Floyd won 8-4 over Stephanie McDonald and Dekkinga 8-4. Emeralda and Pangestu had an 8-3 victory over Ilse Pacheco and Malkin. Youel and De La Torre beat Huckabee and Yusta 8-1 to wrap up the scoring.

Chicago State head coach Jack Barton was very happy with the team's victory.

"I can't say enough about today's match and the performance of the team," said the fourth-year head coach. "They (CSU) fought and battled hard. I'm very proud of them."

The Cougars improved to 4-10 on the season while Northern Illinois fell to 4-4. Chicago State heads to Wisconsin to take on Green Bay on Saturday (March 8th). The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
