Homewood, Ill. -Â The Saint Louis Billikens defeated the Chicago State women's tennis team 5-2 at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club on Friday night (March 21).
Sophomore
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) scored the Cougars' only singles point with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Brooke Urzendowski.Â
Chicago State also scored the doubles point after winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) and freshman
Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) won 8-6 over Cervin Aspen and Maria Toro. Freshman
Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and sophomore
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) were 8-4 winners over Natalia Yacaman and Madison Cook. Stephanie Hollis and Urzendowski were up 3-1 over Perez-Ochoa and freshman
Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) before Pangestu had to retire from the match.Â
In other singles play, Cervin beat Utech 7-5, 6-1. Hollis picked up a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Lloyd. Yacaman was victorious over Huckabee 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore
Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) lost 6-1, 6-1 to Toro. Sophomore
Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) fell 6-2, 6-4 to Cook.
"I trusted our team to play well and they fought extremely hard," said head coach
Jack Barton. "Saint Louis just had more depth than we did."
Saint Louis saw their record improve to 10-4 while the Cougars fell to 5-14. CSU returns to the court on April 5th at Bowling Green University with the match scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.Â
