Utech Scores Victory As Cougars Fall To Coastal Carolina

Orlando, Fla. - The Chicago State women's tennis team was defeated by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon (March 12). 

Freshman Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) scored the only point for the Cougars as she defeated Kourtney Kowal 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

The Chanticleers won the remaining singles matches. Libby Scott was victorious over sophomore Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) 6-2, 6-2. Honami Yazawa was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over freshman Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) while Marie Babayan won by the same score over freshman Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/). Sophomore Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) suffered an injury and retired from her match. She was down 6-0, 1-0 to Romane Delay before she could not finish. Sophomore Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) fell 6-0, 6-0 to Amanda Malatek. 

Lloyd and Utech were defeated 8-4 in doubles play by Kowal and Yazawa. Scott and Dominique De Wit won 8-6 over senior Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) and Pangestu. Malatek and Babyan finished the scoring with a 8-2 victory over Huckabee and Navarro. 

"Coastal Carolina is a very good team," said head coach Jack Barton. "We have to have matches like this outdoors to get ready for the conference tournament. Winning the conference tournament is still our goal." 

The Cougars fell to 5-12 on the season while Coastal Carolina improved to 10-2. Barton's squad continues their Florida trip with a match vs. Bethune-Cookman tomorrow (March 13). The match is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET.
