Homewood, Ill. – The Chicago State women's tennis team split their home doubleheader by defeating Dayton University 4-0 and losing to SIUE 4-2 at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club on Saturday (Feb. 8).

In the morning session, freshmen
Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) and
Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) each picked up points for the Cougars in singles play. Utech defeated Monqiue Krutak 6-3, 6-0 while Pangestu defeated Sierra Halverson 6-4, 6-4. Freshman
Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) won the first set, but suffered a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 loss to Mia Frogner. Sophomore
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) also won her first set, but lost 2-6, 7-5, 10-2 to Haley Ilcewicz. Kali Donner beat sophomore
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) 6-1, 6-2 and Lexi Aranda beat sophomore
Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) 6-0, 6-0. Since the Cougars clinched the match, the doubles matches weren't played.
Chicago State 4, Dayton 0
In the afternoon match, the Cougars swept Dayton 4-0 for their first sweep of an opponent since defeating Western Illinois 7-0 last season (Feb. 24). Utech picked up her second singles victory of the day by beating Sammi Hornbarger 6-1. Pangestu took down Katie Shepherd 7-5, 6-0 while sophomore
Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) won by default. Since the Cougars clinched the match, the remaining singles matches went unfinished. Perez-Ochoa was up 6-1, 4-3 over Carly Peck. Huckabee had a 6-0, 1-2 advantage over Alex Townsend while Lloyd won her first set 6-5 over Mandy Marchant.
In doubles action, Utech and senior
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) beat Katie Shepherd and Carly Peck 6-3 while Pangestu and Lloyd won by default. After CSU clinched the doubles point, the lone doubles match remaining went unfinished as Perez-Ochoa and Huckabee were down 4-5 to Hornbarger and Marchant.
Head coach
Jack Barton was pleased with how the team fought back after a tough morning session loss. "The women really stepped up from earlier," said the fourth-year head coach. "They were focused and didn't let opportunities slip away like the first match.
The Cougars are now 2-4 on the season while SIUE improved to 3-2 and Dayton fell to 0-6. Chicago State wraps up their first homestand of the season with a match vs. Wright State on Friday (Feb. 14). The match is scheduled for 10 AM.
