Cougars Lose To UTPA And Grand Canyon

Homewood, Ill. – The Chicago State women's tennis team lost to the UTPA Broncs 6-1 and the Grand Canyon Antelopes 4-1 at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club on Saturday (Feb. 22).

Sophomore Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) picked up her fifth singles victory of the season to score the only Cougars' point of the match.  

The Broncs won the remaining five singles matches which clinched the victory. Didi Fatchikova won 6-2, 6-1 over freshman Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule). Sophomore Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) lost 6-1, 6-2 to Wanda Beguelin. Sophomore Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) won a set, but suffered a 6-0, 7-6, 10-6 defeat to Mariana Ranzahuer. Senior Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) went down 6-4, 6-2 to Katia Stavroulaki while Reegan Greenwood took home a 6-2, 6-4 win over freshman Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor).

In doubles, Beguelin and Amsallem had an 8-3 win over Huckabee and Lloyd. Greenwood and Stavroulaki had an 8-4 victory over Emeralda and Utech. Fatchikova and Ranzahuer wrapped up the scoring with an 8-6 triumph over Perez-Ochoa and Yusta.

Lloyd won her second singles match of the day by defeating Frederique Van de Velde 6-4, 6-0. Perez-Ochoa fell 6-1, 6-0 to Tatum Prudhomme while Janaki Gunuganti beat Yusta by the same margin. Priscilla Annoual took down Utech 6-1, 6-2. Since the Lopes clinched the victory, the remaining singles matches went unfinished.

In doubles action, Annoual and Prudhomme won 8-2 over Utech and Emeralda while Gunuganti and Van de Velde took home a victory over Huckabee and Lloyd by the same score. Since Grand Canyon had clinched the doubles point, the remaining doubles match went unfinished.

Jack Barton's squad fell to 3-7 on the season while UTPA improved to 4-3 and Grand Canyon saw their record jump to 3-3. The Cougars get right back on the court as they take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers tomorrow (Feb. 23) at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
