LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Chicago State scored the first basket of Saturday (Feb. 15) night's Western Athletic Conference game at New Mexico State. It would be the Cougars' only lead of the game. The Aggies would go on to win 84-55.
NMSU followed senior
Nate Duhon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton)'s opening basket with a 21-1 run. The Cougars fell behind by 20 points but advanced within 12 at 35-23 with 4:44 remaining in the first half. Junior
Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) had five points in a 10-2 run. Preseason WAC Player of the Year Daniel Mullings came back in the game and helped NMSU rebuild their lead to 20 points at 51-31 at the break.
Chicago State opened the game 1-of-11 from the floor and finished the first half 13-of-32 (40.6 percent). NMSU was 18-of-28 (64.3 percent) in the first. For the game, the Cougars finished 40.4 percent while New Mexico State finished the contest shooting 55.8 percent.
The Aggies held a 22-8 advantage in second chance points and a 26-15 edge in points off turnovers. Chicago State made 6-of-9 free throw attempts while New Mexico State connected on 22-of-37 from the line.
Rosenberg scored 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Senior
Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) added 13 points. NMSU's Renaldo Dixon contributed 20 points.
Chicago State falls to .500 in WAC play for the first time this season at 5-5 and 10-14 overall. New Mexico State improves to 20-8 and 9-3 in the WAC. The Cougars return to the court on Thursday (Feb. 20) against Utah Valley in a WAC contest at the Jones Convocation Center.
