Homewood, Ill. – The Chicago State women's tennis team picked up their second consecutive victory after beating the Wright State Raiders 4-2 at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club on Friday morning (Feb. 14).
The Cougars picked up three points in singles play. Freshman
Kirsa Utech (Nindorf, Germany/Meldorfer Gelehrtenschule) picked up fourth straight singles victory by defeating Linsey Verstrepen 6-4, 6-2. Senior
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) won 7-6, 6-2 over Vanessa Madrigal. Sophomore
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) clinched the match for Chicago State when she took down Lauren Smith 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In other singles action, sophomore
Gema Bolado Yusta (Madrid, Spain./IES Lázaro Cárdenas) fell 6-3, 6-2 to Elaine Cloern while freshman
Hanna Pangestu (Jakarta, Indonesia/) lost 6-3, 6-2 to Aby Madrigal. Freshman
Faith Huckabee (Hazel Crest, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor)'s match went unfinished as the Cougars had already clinched the victory.
CSU also won the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Emeralda and Utech won 8-4 over Aby Madrigal and Vanessa Madrigal. Huckabee and Lloyd were victorious over Turner and Smith by a 9-7 score. Cloern and Verstrepen beat Yusta and Pangestu 8-0.
Head coach
Jack Barton was happy with the team's effort in the victory.
"The team really fought hard and Wright State pushed us to our limit," said Barton. "We stepped up to the challenge."
Chicago State improved to 3-4 in the spring while Wright State fell to 1-5. The Cougars travel to Carbondale to take on Southern Illinois tomorrow (Feb. 15). The match is scheduled to start at 10 am.Â
