Valpo Pulls Out 4-3 Decision Over Chicago State Women's Tennis

Mysta Townsell won at singles and doubles with her sister Mia on Monday.
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Valparaiso women's tennis edged Chicago State 4-3 on Monday (April 15) in a match that came down to the wire. The contest was played inside at the Courts of Northwest Indiana.

The Cougars' normal lineup was adjusted after freshman Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) was forced to miss the match due to illness. Chicago State lost the doubles point after falling at No. 1 and No. 2 play. The only doubles match the Cougars did pick up was at No. 3 where junior Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) and sophomore Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) earned their first ever career victory, besting Angelina Goheen and Lauren Kammerer 8-5.

The doubles' point ended up being the difference after the two clubs split the six singles matches. Senior Ruta Grinvalde (Cesis, Latvia/) won her final regular season match 6-1, 6-2 over Michele Fredlake at No. 3 singles. Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) used a 6-3, 6-0 score to top Goheen at No. 5 singles. The Cougars also pulled out a win at No. 1 singles thanks to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kristin Zakiewicz by freshman Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male).

The match came down to the result at No. 2 singles between freshman Viviene Noel (Liege, Belgium/) and Kaitlyn Hamel. Noel won set one 6-1 before falling 6-2 in the second. Noel fought off five match points before Hamel capitalized on the sixth to defeat Noel 7-5 in the third to clinch the match for Valpo.

“We woke up too late,” Chicago State head coach Jack Barton said. “Valpo played well in doubles and we didn't. We fought hard in singles. Mysta and Mia's performance today was huge but we have to use those wins to our advantage. Not having Carynne in the lineup wasn't the reason we lost. Valpo came ready to play and our poor doubles play made the difference.”

Chicago State falls to 5-17. Valparaiso moves to 2-19. The Cougars travel to the National Invitation Tennis Tournament this weekend in New Jersey to close out the 2012-13 slate.
