ORLANDO, Fla. – Chicago State women's tennis dropped a non-conference contest to Augustana (S.D.) on Tuesday (March 12) evening 6-3. The two teams played under the best of nine points format with each doubles contest counting as a point.
Freshman
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) and senior
Ruta Grinvalde (Cesis, Latvia/) defeated Jessa Richards and Hannah Gebauer 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
The Cougars picked up two victories in singles play. Freshman
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) defeated Richards at No. 2 singles 4-6, 7-5, 10-4. Freshman
Viviene Noel (Liege, Belgium/) won at No. 3 singles over Michelle Wadas 2-6, 6-1, 10-3.
The Cougars played tough at doubles, but Lloyd and Noel lost at No. 1 8-6 to Katie Jesperson and Wades 8-6. Chicago State's
Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) and
Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) fell at No. 3 to Heather Sullivan and Jenna Helleberg.
In other singles matches, Perez-Ochoa fell to Jesperson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1. Grinvalde lost at No. 4 to Gebauer 6-3, 6-2. Navarro fell in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 5 to Sullivan.
Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) dropped a 6-0, 6-2 contest to Helleberg.
"We came out too slow," Chicago State head coach
Jack Barton said. "We have to get better at getting out of the starting gate. We fight hard but sometimes it is just too late."
Augustana is 11-1. Chicago State is now 4-12. The Cougars play Bethune-Cookman on Friday (March 15).
