NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Senior
Isaac Provitt (Hazel Crest, Ill./Rich Central)'s (Hazel Crest, Ill. / Rich Central) victory in the 60 meter dash highlighted Chicago State men's track and field's performance at the Chicagoland Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 9). North Central served as host for the annual event.
“They give shirts for those who finish in the top three and the men would not be outdone,” Chicago State head coach
Craig Collins said. “They matched the women's performance yesterday by earning three shirts.”
Provitt won the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.98. His time was one hundreth of a second better than the second place finisher Justen Garth of UIC. Provitt was two hundreths of a second off a school record in the event. It's the second consecutive year Chicago State won the 60 meter dash at the Chicagoland Championships.
Jamal Ephraim (Hazel Crest, IL/Lincoln College) won it last season with a time of 6.97, also leaving second place for Garth.
Provitt also had a nice showing in the 200 meter dash, finishing second (22.53).
Junior
Tyler Odom (Sacramento, Calif./Monterey Trail, H.S.) (Sacramento, Calif./Monterey Trail) was eighth in the 400 meter dash (51.38).
A pair of Cougars earned points in the long jump. Freshman
Kory Jackson (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) keeps improving his personal best each week and Saturday was no different. His 6.68 meter effort was good for third place.
Emmanuel Jegede (Bakersfield, Calif./Independence) took eighth for the Cougars, jumping 6.36.
“We are continually improving in several areas,” Collins said. “Our guys are growing more competitive each week & peaking at the right time.”
Collins has also been happy with the leadership he's seen from his squad.
“
Samuel McKinney (St. Charles, Iowa/Interstate 35) has taken his role of leader up a notch with consistent performances and flexibility to run in various races when needed,” Collins said. “He took a spot in the 4x4 when two of our guys went down with injuries.”
The Cougars finished in eighth place of 19 teams by scoring 26 points.
“I like where we are at this point of the indoor season,” Collins said. “We should see some bright spots come Great West Conference indoor championships in a couple of weeks.”
The Cougars return to the track on Feb 15 at UW-Milwaukee. It's the Cougars' final meet before the GWC Indoor Championships on Feb. 23-24 in Houston, Texas.
