HOMEWOOD, Ill. – Chicago State women's tennis won their second match in three days by edging IUPUI 4-3 in a dual match at the H-F Racquet Club on Sunday (Feb. 3) morning.
The Cougars dropped the doubles competition with only junior
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) (Jakarta, Indonesia) and freshman
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) (Louisville, Ky.) picking up a victory (8-5).
The Cougars took a 2-1 lead by earning quick victories in No. 6 singles and No. 1 singles. Senior
Ruta Grinvalde (Cesis, Latvia/) (Cesis, Latvia) swept Jaclyn Haymen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 and Emeralda won 7-5, 6-1 over Shelby Hullett at No. 1.
IUPUI pulled out a straight set victory at No. 3 singles to even the match at two points apiece. Perez-Ochoa earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles before IUPUI tied it at 3-3 with a victory by Jesika Bays over freshman
Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) (Melbourne, Australia) 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5
The final match remaining was at No. 2 singles where freshman
Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) (East Lansing, Mich.) and Abbey Neff split the first two sets. Lloyd won the opener 7-5 only to see Neff win the second 6-1. Neff led the third 3-2 when Neff was forced to retire due to an injury. It gave the fourth and match clinching point to the Cougars.
“You hope you never win due to an injury and you feel bad for them but we played hard and fought through adversity to earn this victory,” Chicago State head coach
Jack Barton said. “We've had some nagging injuries so to win two-of-three this weekend is a great accomplishment. I'm really proud of the team.”
The Cougars defeated UW-Green Bay on Friday but fell to Southern Illinois on Saturday.
“We have a lot of work to do in doubles and we'll focus on that this week,” Barton said. “But as far as singles and the fight to win, I couldn't have been prouder this weekend.”
Chicago State improves to 2-4. IUPUI is 1-2.
The Cougars hit the road on Feb. 8 for a road contest at Wright State. Competition will begin at 7 p.m.
