CSU Women's Tennis Runs Through Western Illinois 7-0

HOMEWOOD, Ill. – Chicago State women's tennis didn't lose a set in a 7-0 blanking of Western Illinois on Sunday (Feb. 24) morning.
 
“It's good to rebound and get a victory,” Chicago State head coach Jack Barton said. “We did a lot of things well today and I was glad to see the team motivated for the match. We have the jump to get another streak started and the next six matches will be key going into April. I believe we can get back to a .500 record but we will have to fight tooth and nail to get there.”
 
Junior Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) won at No. 1 singles over Yessenia Mejia (WIU) 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles freshman Carynne Lloyd (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) defeated Megan Pazdernick 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) won every point in her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Elana Berdichevsky at No. 3 singles. Freshman Viviene Noel (Liege, Belgium/) topped Holly Conlin at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Sabrine Navarro (Melbourne, Australia/) earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Kristen Havelka. Finally at No. 6, senior Ruta Grinvalde (Cesis, Latvia/) swept Ese Davis 6-0, 6-1.
 
The Cougars won all three doubles matches by the same 8-1 score. Perez-Ochoa and Emeralda topped Jessica Callahan and Pazdernick. Lloyd and Viviene (CHIST) defeated Conlin and Berdichevsky at No. 2. Finally at No. 3 Navarro and Grinvalde bested Jessica Theobald and Mejia.
 
In exhibition matches, junior Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) swept Callahan 8-0. Sophomore Mia Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) earned an 8-3 victory over Theobald. The Townsells teamed up to defeat Havelka and Davis in a double matches 8-0.
 
“The team has been through a lot these last two weeks with injuries and having to play higher in the lineup but that is part of the college game,” Barton said. “After what they have been though they know they can be successful in the month of March. They will be ready.”
 
Western Illinois falls to 0-6. Chicago State is 4-9. The Cougars play at Saint Louis on Friday (Feb. 1).
