MUNCIE, Ind. – Chicago State women's tennis opened the 2013 spring campaign with a 6-1 setback at Ball State on Saturday (Jan. 19) evening. The competition was played inside at the YMCA Tennis Center.
The highlight of the day was junior
Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia/) (Jakarta, Indonesia) taking down Ayaka Terashi 6-4, 6-0 in No. 1 singles.
Emeralda and freshman
Marnie Perez-Ochoa (Louisville, Ky./Male) fell in No. 1 doubles 7-3 to Terashi and Courtney Earnest. Senior
Ruta Grinvalde (Cesis, Latvia/) (Cesis, Latvia) lost a close No. 5 singles contest 6-3, 7-5 to Bethany Moore.
“We have to take the nerves out of playing,” head coach
Jack Barton said. “That is what killed us in doubles. Shots we make in practice, we missed today. We fought hard and didn't give up in any of the singles matches. We have to slow the game down in our heads to make our opponents hit one more ball. Good progress from the freshman but we still have a way to go.”
Ball State improves to 2-0 while Chicago State falls to 0-1. The Cougars return to the court Friday (Jan. 25) vs. Drake in a home match at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club.
