CHICAGO – For the second consecutive game, four Cougars reached double figures led by senior forward Jeremy Robinson (Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower)'s (Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower/Iowa Western CC) 16 points, but it wasn't enough as Chicago State men's basketball dropped a heart-breaker to the Loyola Chicago Ramblers 66-63 in overtime at the Jones Convocation Center on Sunday (Jan. 20) night.

“We had our opportunities,” Chicago State head coach Tracy Dildy said. “I thought we didn't help ourselves to start the game in the first half when you spot a team 13 points and you find yourself fighting up hill the whole game it's going to come back and bite you.”

Although a tough shooting first half stymied the Cougars early, they recovered and traded blows with Loyola in the second half.

Chicago State trailed by three with under a minute to play in regulation when junior forward Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing with 49 seconds remaining. Loyola brought the ball up court and asked for time. The Chicago State defense then forced a five second violation on the ensuing Ramblers inbounds play which left Chicago State with 36.2 seconds to work with for the final shot.

After running the game clock down to 10 seconds, sophomore guard Jamere Dismukes (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East/BlackHawk College) then drove to the right of the lane but his shot attempt was short and the ball was tipped out. Dismukes, who scored 13 points and dropped five assists, found the rebound and then fired a midrange jumper that hit the back of the rim to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Chicago State trailed 62-61 after a Robinson layup with 3:10 left. Loyola followed with a jumper to take a three-point lead. Sophomore guard Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) then cut the deficit to one with two free throws and 55 seconds to play.  After a Ramblers' turnover, Dismukes had another opportunity to potentially win the game but his floater rimmed out. A Robinson foul on the rebound attempt put Loyola at the line with a one-and-one. Christian Thomas missed the free throw but corralled his own miss. Pippen then fouled Joe Crisman with seven seconds remaining. Crisman knocked down both to make it a 66-63 game. The Cougars had one more try, but Pippen's three from the left wing hit the back iron.

“(Loyola) made plays to ensure they get that win,” Dildy said. “When you talk about getting that rebound off the missed free throw in overtime, that was a big play. You expect that from a Porter Moser coached team.”

The setback comes eight days after a three overtime setback at NJIT. The Cougars also have a loss to Rice in overtime this year.

Pippen finished the game with 14 points, while Rosenberg finished with 10. Robinson scored all 16 of his points after halftime.

“In the second half we got some really good things on some isolation,” Dildy said. “We really got Jeremy Robinson (Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower) going which is a key we've been trying to do all year.”
