HOUSTON – Houston's Joseph Young scored a game-high 24 points to help the Cougars defeat the Chicago State Cougars 79-57 at the Hofheinz Pavilion on Saturday (Dec. 22) afternoon.

Houston then responded with a 12-0 run in which Chicago State was whistled for seven fouls over a 2:18 span. Houston didn't commit a single foul in the stretch. Jamere Dismukes (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East/BlackHawk College) cut the deficit to single digits at 34-25 with 2:45 remaining. However it would be the last time Chicago State would trail by single digits. Houston scored the final six points of the half, four by free throws, to hold a 40-25 halftime lead. Chicago State was unable to get the score any closer in the second half.
Houston held a 40-26 edge in points in the paint.
“They dominated us in the paint and it is hard to win games if teams can impose their will on you like Houston did today,” head coach
Tracy Dildy said. “Lots of credit goes to Houston.”
Chicago State led 26-20 in bench points.
“With a few days off next week we had a few guys take the break early and I've seen that for 25 years,” Dildy said. “But we were able to play some other guys off the bench today and I was impressed with their effort and fight.”
Rosenberg totaled 16 points and eight rebounds with two steals. Dismukes added 16 points and three assists with just one turnover in 27 minutes.
“We're still focusing on the big picture of getting ready for conference play and winning the Great West,” Dildy said. “Games like today help us improve.”
Houston improves to 9-2 while Chicago State falls to 3-11.
Chicago State takes a week away from the court before returning at Ohio State on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 3:30 PM CT. The game will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
