BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Chicago State fell to LIU, 79-75, in a closely contested game on Wednesday night at the Steinberg Wellness Center during the NEC Quarterfinals. CSU (7-25, 5-13 NEC) managed to score 32 points in the paint but was unable to overcome LIU's (22-10, 15-3 NEC) seven three-pointers.

The game opened with Chicago State taking an early lead with a layup by Stephen Byard at 19:13, assisted by Marcus Tankersley. LIU quickly responded, with Shadrak Lasu scoring a layup at 18:49 to level the score. As the first half progressed, LIU gained momentum with Mason Porter-Brown's 3-pointer at 7:54, extending its lead to 25-18. CSU fought back with a series of free throws by Byard at 7:20, narrowing the gap, but Greg Gordon's dunk at 6 seconds before halftime gave LIU a 40-33 advantage at the break.

Chicago State made a strong push in the second half, narrowing the gap with LIU. Doyel Cockrill III was instrumental, hitting multiple 3-pointers, including a key one at 11:57 that brought Chicago State within a point, 54-53. Despite his efforts, LIU maintained their lead, with Jomo Goings contributing significantly, including a layup at 13:04. Byard's late-game performance, including a layup at 2:04 and a defensive block with 30 seconds remaining, kept the game close. However, LIU secured the win with two free throws by Jamal Fuller in the final moments, ending the game 79-75 in their favor.

Cockrill III scored 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and recorded two steals. Byard posted a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while adding two blocks and two steals. CJ Ray contributed 12 points and led the team with five assists. Braelon Bush added nine points and two assists.
