CHICAGO - Chicago State men's basketball picked up their first win of the 2012-13 season after defeating Concordia Chicago 81-65 at the Jones Convocation Center on Tuesday (Nov. 13) evening.
Fueled by the hot shooting of junior forward
Matt Ross (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) (Dixon, Ill./Dixon/Sauk Valley CC), Chicago State never trailed in the ballgame. Ross made 7-of-8 field goal attempts including 4-of-4 from three-point range in the first half. He scored all of his game-high 19 points in the first, and finished 7-of-11 from the field.
Ross led a Chicago State squad that led by as many as 26 points in the opening half. The Cougars shot 18-of-33 from the field including 8-of-15 from beyond the arc in the half.
“Matt is going to have a great future and great career here,” head coach
Tracy Dildy said. “Matt has a high basketball IQ so we're really expecting big things out of Matt.”
The rest of the Chicago State squad followed Ross' lead as senior forward
Jeremy Robinson (Decatur, Ill./Eisenhower) (Decatur, Ill. / Eisenhower / Iowa Western CC) chipped in 17 points with eight rebounds, a career-high six assists and two steals. Junior
Nate Duhon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) (Lansing, Mich. / Sexton / Lansing CC) finished in double-digits with 10 points. Junior
Jamere Dismukes (Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) (Park Forest, Ill. / Rich East / Blackhawk College) added six assists and three steals.
“We were better for 30 minutes today than we were last game so that's a good sign and some good things to take away from this game,” Dildy said. “We had 10 minutes there that I'd like to completely forget so we're getting close to playing a full game.”
The Cougars recorded assists on 24 of their 30 baskets. Defensively, the Cougars forced 25 turnovers. Chicago State has forced 55 combined turnovers in their first two contests.
Chicago State is now 1-1. The contest was an exhibition game for Concordia.
The Cougars travel to Kent State on Friday (Nov. 16). Tip is set for 6:00 p.m. CT. The contest is the first of four games in the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic.
