HOUSTON, Texas – Senior Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) scored a game-high 20 points and equaled a career high with seven steals in leading Chicago State (15-8, 6-0) to a 79-50 Great West Conference women's basketball win over host Houston Baptist (2-19, 0-6) this evening at HBU's Sharp Gym.
The Green and White jumped out to a 20-7 advantage in the first eight minutes of the game which included eight points from senior Caila Desroches (Long Island, NY/Monroe CC) (Long Island, N.Y.). CSU posted its biggest leading margin of the first half with a 39-17 lead heading into intermission after finishing the half by scoring 19 of the final 29 points. Waldon also scored 10 points and junior Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) added six points in the opening stanza for the Cougars.
The visitors opened the first four minutes of the second half with a 13-5 scoring drive with junior Natalie Marlowe (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) (South Milwaukee, Wis.) tallying six points to increase its lead to 52-22 with 15:55 remaining in the game. The Huskies would get no closer than 28 points the rest of the way.
Senior Tressa Beckel (Waseca, Minn./Wisconsin) (Waseca, Minn.) tallied her team-leading seventh double-double of the season after recording 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Desroches also posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards in addition to recording a game-high two blocked shots. Marlowe finished the game with 10 points and a game-high six assists for the Cougars.
HBU was led by juniors Megan Green and Jamie Spriggs, who each tallied 14 points with Spriggs also posting a game-high two blocks. Sophomore Destini Texada added eight rebounds, six points and six assists, while senior Tia Jackson produced five assists, five points and five rebounds.
CSU travels to Edinburg, Texas this Saturday to battle Texas-Pan American in a GWC battle with a start time of 5:30 p.m.
