Men’s Basketball Rallies from Halftime Deficit; Posts 64-59 Win over Georgia Southern

Junior Jonathon Montgomery tallied a season-best 17 points in leading CSU to a 64-59 win over Georgia Southern

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Chicago State men's basketball came back from a 12-point halftime deficit to Georgia Southern in its South Padre Island Invitational contest here today and later scored the final 10 points in a 64-59 win at the SPI Convention Center. The Cougars improved to 2-4, while the Eagles fell to 2-4 on the year.

 

Junior Jonathon Montgomery (Chicago, IL/Northern Iowa) (Chicago, Ill.) led all scorers with a season-best 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 23 minutes off the bench, while senior Carl Montgomery (Chicago, IL/Shepard) (Chicago, Ill.) contributed 11 points and sophomore Victor Scott (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) (Chicago, Ill.) added 11 points.

 

Senior Hajji Martin (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) (Chicago, Ill.) tallied game highs of 11 rebounds and two blocked shots in addition to scoring eight points. Senior Antonio Lofton (Chicago, IL/Parkland College) (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Ardarius Simmons (Chicago, IL/Southeastern (IA) CC) (Chicago, Ill.) each added eight points for the Cougars.

 

Leading Georgia Southern was junior Ben Drayton and senior Rory Spencer, who each produced 13 points. Freshman Jelani Hewitt posted 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals, and fellow classmate Eric Ferguson posted 10 points.

 

CSU concludes the SPI Invitational tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Liberty with the tip-off set for 2 p.m.
