Women's Tennis Posts 4-1 Win Over Longwood, Claims National Independent Championship

Lina Tejoprayitno and the Cougars defeated Longwood, 4-1, to capture the National Independent Championship
EDINBURG, TexasChicago State women's tennis won the National Independent Championship this morning by posting a 4-1 victory over Longwood at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas-Pan American.

 

The Cougars finished the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record and concluded the season with a 14-3 mark under first year head coach LeTrone Mason, while the Lancers fell to 5-12 on the year.

 

Sophomore Dian Mayasari (Tulang Agung, Indonesia/St. Thomas Aquino) (Tulang Agung, Indonesia) and junior Golda Rubina (Jakarta, Indonesia/Budi Murni) (Jakarta, Indonesia) opened the contest with an 8-2 win over Mason Davis and Ashley Melson at No. 2 doubles. The Cougars' No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Peggy Moore (Toledo, OH/Libbey HS) (Toledo, Ohio) and freshman Lia Tejoprayitno (Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia) later defeated LU's Jackie Esguerra and Nasim Moadab by an 8-4 margin to clinch the important doubles point.

 

Freshman Lina Tejoprayitno (Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia) led her No. 3 singles match by a 6-3 margin before earning the win against Esguerra, who retired just before the second set began. Davis captured LU's lone point following the No. 4 singles contest with Moore after leading by scores of 6-1 and 4-0 before she retired to end their match.

 

Rubina posted a straight-set victory over Melson at No. 5 singles with scores of 6-4 and 6-3 before Lia Tejoprayitno clinched the championship with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Moadab in the No. 6 singles contest.

 

Mayasari and senior Yosefin Eliza (Jakarta, Indonesia/St. Vianney HS) (Jakarta, Indonesia) earned all-tournament team honors for the Cougars following the three-day, round-robin tournament.
