CHICAGO – Chicago State women's tennis posted its sixth consecutive victory Tuesday afternoon as it captured a close 4-3 win over host UIC at the Flames Courts. The Cougars improve to 6-3 on the year while the Flames saw their season record drop to 5-7.
CSU opened the match with a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point via winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Senior Yosefin Eliza (Jakarta, Indonesia/St. Vianney HS) and freshman Lina Tejoprayitno teamed to squeak out a 9-8 (7) victory over Kristen McPhillips and Mariya Kovaleva at No. 1 doubles.
In the No. 2 doubles match, junior Golda Rubina (Jakarta, Indonesia/Budi Murni) and sophomore Dian Mayasari (Tulang Agung, Indonesia/St. Thomas Aquino) posted an 8-4 win over Ilinca Cristescu and Ulrikke Von Ubisch. The No. 3 doubles tandem of sophomore Peggy Moore (Toledo, OH/Libbey HS) and freshman Lia Tejoprayitno dropped an 8-1 decision to Jenna Reisch and Amy Jellish.
The Flames bounced back early in the singles matches as Eliza fell to McPhillips by a 6-4, 6-0 decision at No. 2, while Lina Tejoprayitno dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match at No. 3 to Elena Antakova. Moore lost her No. 4 singles contest to Jellish via scores of 6-1, 6-0.
Rubina brought CSU back into the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Reisch in the No. 5 singles battle before Mayasari evened the contest with a 6-3, 6-3 win past Cristescu at No. 1 singles.
The match was decided in the No. 6 singles as Lia Tejoprayitno regrouped from losing the first set to Von Ubisch, 6-0, before claiming a 7-6 tiebreaker win in the second set and posting a dominant 6-2 win in the final set to give CSU the win.
