Cougars Battle, Fall 2-0 to Southern Illinois

CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago St. lost to Southern Ill. 2-0 on Sunday at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep. The Cougars kept the match scoreless through halftime despite an 11-0 first-half shot margin, but finished with five shots to Southern Ill.'s 24.

Sierra Sonko recorded four saves over 90 minutes, making three in the first half and one in the second. Selena Poveda-Barrios led CSU with two shots, including one on goal. Ameerah Kolleff put her lone shot attempt on goal.

Chicago State kept Southern Ill. off the board through a first half in which Sonko made three saves, including two in the opening six minutes. After earning a corner in the 31st minute, CSU absorbed another Southern Ill. push late, including six shots and two corners from 37:37 to 44:27. The half ended 0-0.

The Cougars were held off the scoreboard in the second half as Southern Ill. broke a scoreless match on Maya Dixon's goal from Penny Warner in the 55th minute. Kolleff forced a save in the 51st minute, and Chicago State later had looks from Poveda-Barrios, Jennifer Vasquez and Stephanie Vazquez Ceron but could not convert. Southern Ill. added a Victoria Hassan goal in the 80th minute, and the match finished 2-0.
