Chicago State Shows Resilience in Loss to Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Chicago State (0-2-0) faced a tough match against Purdue (2-0-1), who won with a final score of 7-0 on Thursday at Folk Field. Despite the outcome, CSU showed resilience, managing three shots while Purdue recorded 53 shots and 23 on goal.

Purdue controlled the first period, capitalizing on a high volume of shots to secure a 2-0 lead against the Cougars. Jaiden Anderson opened the scoring in the fifth minute with an assist from Megan Santa Cruz, while Rosa Maalouf extended the advantage with a goal in the 38th minute. Despite facing 23 shots, Kamila Aguilar made several crucial saves for Chicago State, showing determination and keeping the visitors within reach.

Purdue dominated the second period with five goals, beginning with Rosa Maalouf's strike in the 46th minute, assisted by Irene Campo and Jaiden Anderson. Chicago St. managed several defensive saves, notably by goalkeeper Sierra Sonko, who stopped multiple shots including a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Despite these efforts, Purdue's aggressive offense, which included a penalty goal by Gabriela Angulo in the 51st minute and subsequent goals by Megan Santa Cruz and Zoe Miles, extended the lead to 7-0 by the period's end.

Sonko recorded 10 saves in the second half, showcasing her skill and perseverance. Aguilar added six saves in the first half, facing 24 shots. Natalia Ortiz and Selena Poveda-Barrios each registered a shot, contributing to the Cougars' offensive efforts and demonstrating their fighting spirit.

The next challenge for CSU is a matchup against Indiana State University. The game is set for Saturday, Aug. 22, in Terre Haute, Indiana.
