CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago State University Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Chicago native
Jakyl Ramsey as the program's first-ever Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach. Ramsey's appointment marks a major milestone as the Cougars continue building a strong foundation for the future of Chicago State Football.
A product of Chicago's South Side and a graduate of Simeon Career Academy, Ramsey brings more than a decade of coaching experience, championship pedigree, and a deep commitment to developing disciplined, high-character student-athletes. His coaching philosophy emphasizes preparation, hard work, and creating an environment where athletes strive for both educational and athletic excellence — a vision he outlined clearly in his professional profile:
"My goal is always to provide an inspirational and motivational environment where preparation, practice, and hard work are top priorities."
Ramsey arrives at Chicago State following successful coaching stints at several of Illinois' premier high school football programs, including Mount Carmel High School, Simeon Career Academy, and Kenwood Academy. His resume includes:
- IHSA State Championships at Mount Carmel in 2022, 2023, 2024 (7A) and 2025 (8A)
- CPS City Championship at Simeon (2014)
- CPS Conference Championship at Kenwood (2015)
- Multiple State Playoff Quarterfinal and Semifinal appearances as a wide receivers coach and assistant offensive coordinator
Across his career, Ramsey has served in key leadership roles such as Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Wide Receivers Coach, and Defensive Backs Coach. His ability to elevate player performance and build cohesive, competitive units has made him one of the region's most respected young coaches.
Ramsey earned his Bachelor's degree in Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Master of Science in Sport Psychology from Capella University. He also holds certification through the American Sports Education Program.
A Chicago Leader Building Chicago State Football
Chicago State Athletics leadership emphasized that Ramsey's Chicago roots, championship experience, and player-first approach make him an ideal fit for the program's next chapter.
"Coach Ramsey understands what Chicago football means — the talent, the toughness, the pride," said Head Football Coach Bobby Rome II. "His experience developing student-athletes and his commitment to excellence will be instrumental as we continue building a competitive and sustainable football program."
In his new role, Ramsey will oversee all aspects of special teams strategy while assisting in the development of the Cougars' defensive backfield.
