Marcus Tankersley Leads Cougars In Defeat At Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Chicago State (7-24, 5-13 NEC) fell to Wagner College (13-16, 8-10 NEC) with a final score of 80-61 on Saturday at the Spiro Sports Center Athletic Complex. This game marked the end of the regular season, adding extra significance to the matchup for both teams. Despite a strong 32 points in the paint, the Cougars couldn't overcome Wagner's 11 three-pointers and 43 total rebounds.
 
The game began with Wagner taking an early lead, scoring consistently through the first minutes. Travis Gray made a noticeable impact by converting a three-pointer at the 17:03 mark, contributing to Wagner's early advantage. CSU struggled offensively but found some momentum midway through the half with a three-pointer from Lionel Larvadain at 13:37, which was followed by another three-pointer from Braelon Bush. Despite these efforts, Wagner maintained control, with Nick Jones adding crucial points both inside and beyond the arc, extending its lead. By halftime, Wagner led 42-24, showcasing a strong performance in the paint and at the free-throw line.
 
Wagner maintained its lead throughout the second half, finishing with a 79-61 victory over Chicago State. Bryan Akanmu and Travis Gray contributed significantly to Wagner's scoring, with Akanmu hitting a layup at 6:04 and Gray sinking a crucial 3-pointer at 1:52. For the Cougars, CJ Ray's consistent efforts included a layup at 13:58 and a successful free throw to narrow the gap momentarily. Despite Chicago State's attempts, Wagner's defensive rebounding and consistent scoring secured the win.
 
Marcus Tankersley led the scoring effort with 19 points, converting 8 of 11 from the field, including two 3-pointers. Ray contributed 12 points and added four rebounds. Bush scored nine points while recording four assists and two steals. Dakari Thomas made a defensive impact with three steals.
