Chicago State Men's Soccer Suffers Setback Against Howard Thursday

CHICAGO — The Chicago State men's soccer team lost to Howard 2-1 in a Northeast Conference showdown on Thursday (Oct. 1) at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy. 

First Half
- Howard created the early chances, with Jabulile Mooketsi saving Xavier Sharp at 5:36 and 17:20 around a Sharp shot off the top woodwork.
- Cailen Thomas scored off a Xavier Sharp assist at 17:53, giving Howard a 1-0 lead.
- CSU generated five shots and three corner kicks from 27:54 to 34:41, including Darrien Gates II hitting the top woodwork and Liam Keiller saves on Karma Bhagentsang and Mason Radulski.
- Bill Okumu put a shot on goal at 40:23, but Keiller made the save and Howard remained ahead 1-0 at halftime.

Second Half
- After Mooketsi saved Howard's shot at 46:34, Bhagentsang and Darrien Gates II put shots on goal, and Jorge Valle scored off Gates II's assist at 47:56 to tie the match 1-1. The Cougars added three corner kicks by 55:32.
- Howard earned three corners and took four shots from 56:49 to 66:08; Mooketsi made three saves in that span to keep the score 1-1. He added saves at 71:24 and 73:17 before the next score.
- Howard went ahead 2-1 at 78:51 when Rayce Welborne scored from Barry Souare-Wooten's assist. Chicago State had Saul Silva's shot saved at 81:08 and Jaden Jaime's attempt at 86:13, but Howard finished with the 2-1 win.

Mooketsi recorded eight saves in 90 minutes, including six in the second half. Valle scored on one of his two shots and put one attempt on goal. Darrien Gates II recorded an assist and led CSU with five shots. Bhagentsang put all three of his shots on goal.

Howard improved to 3-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play while the Cougars are now 0-9-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
