CHICAGO, Ill. - A late first half set piece goal by senior
Veronika Avila was all that was needed Tuesday night as the Chicago State Women's Soccer team defeated the Hampton Pirates 1-0. The Cougars then relied on hard fought defense and excellent goalkeeping to maintain the shutout.
Despite being on defense for most the game, the Cougars showed their effort, hard-work and determined in their own defensive zones throughout. The game was decided when the Cougars earned a corner kick chance and were rewarded.
Leah Rocha sent a corner kick into the box where senior defender
Veronika Avila scored her first goal of the season on a running header to put the Cougars ahead 1-0. The Cougars then played nearly the final 30 minutes of the game on defense preventing the Pirates from getting the equalizer.
The Pirates were able to put 31 shots throughout the match. Freshman goalkeeper
Aviana Gutierrez stopped all 12 of the Pirates shots on goal to earn the first shutout win of her career.
Renee Davis,
Veronika Avila, and
Izabella Kilgore were the three Cougars to earn 90 minutes of game time played.
Looking ahead: With their second win on the season, the Cougars now have doubled their win total from a season ago now improving to 2-2-2 as the season now rolls into September. Chicago State will now enter a stretch of four straight games on the road with the first being this Sunday September 7 as they will travel to Dayton, Ohio for a match up with Wright State University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM (CT)
