MACOMB, Ill. — Chicago State women's volleyball opened play at the Leatherneck Classic on Thursday evening, showing grit and growth in a 3-0 setback to host Western Illinois inside Western Hall. Set scores were 25-19, 25-15, 25-23.
The Cougars (0-8) battled in every frame, highlighted by a strong defensive presence at the net that produced 13 team blocks compared to just three for the Leathernecks. Middle blocker
Nayella George led the way with 11 kills, four blocks, and 11 digs for a near double-double.
Jocelyn Carter added eight kills and three blocks, while
Leah Linares Castro chipped in six kills, 14 digs, and a team-best four block assists.
In the opening set, Chicago State went point-for-point with WIU before the hosts pulled away late. The Cougars' defensive intensity carried into the second, where George and Carter teamed up for timely blocks to keep the set within reach. The third frame showcased CSU's resilience as they erased a mid-set deficit, pushing the Leathernecks to the brink before falling by just two points.
