Chicago, Ill. (August 28, 2025) — In a spirited performance before 202 fans at Wish Field, the Chicago State Cougars (0–3–0) battled hard but fell just short, dropping a 2–1 decision to DePaul (1–0–2). Despite the final result, the Cougars demonstrated encouraging signs - enthusiasm, fight, and flashes of offensive creativity that suggest much more to come.
First-Half Fightback
DePaul grabbed an early lead at the 8:05 mark when Keagan Pace found the back of the net, assisted by Ryan Thomas. Not to be outdone,
Jack Geist responded swiftly for CSU in the 14th minute. Geist, fed by an enterprising through ball from
Karma Bhagentsang, slotted home his first goal of the season, tying the match at 1–1 and injecting energy into the stadium.
DePaul Edges Ahead
The only other tally arrived just before halftime—a penalty in the 29:52 mark converted by Luca Iaccino. Though a tough break, it didn't dampen the Cougars' energy.
Strong Goalkeeping and Defensive Accountability
Despite being outshot 21–4 (with 6 on target), CSU's defense, led by goalie
Johan Rodriguez, stood firm. Rodriguez made four saves—three in the second half—to keep the Cougars within striking distance.
Offensive Resilience
Jack Geist's dynamism up front was a highlight; not only did he score, but he also created upside with intelligent movement and touches inside DePaul's box.
Karma Bhagentsang's assist showcased his vision and calmness under pressure—an encouraging performance from a freshman who looks comfortable in a playmaking role.
Looking Ahead
Though the scoreboard read a narrow loss, CSU's competitive edge and moments of brilliance were clear takeaways. The team's cohesion, effort levels, and tactical discipline—especially in how they transitioned quickly after conceding—suggest this lineup has the foundation of something promising.
