Chicago State University Names James Hudgins III First-Ever Recruiting Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach

CHICAGO, Ill. (December 29, 2025) – Chicago State University announced today that James Hudgins III has been named the program's first-ever Recruiting Coordinator, marking a major step forward in the continued growth and development of Cougar football.

Hudgins joins Chicago State after serving as the wide receivers coach at Fayetteville State University, where he brought a strong coaching pedigree and a proven track record of player development to the Broncos' program.

Hudgins began his coaching career at Allderdice High School in 2014 as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, quickly establishing himself as a sharp offensive mind and mentor for young quarterbacks. From 2013 to 2015, he also served as an assistant coach for the Evolve 7-on-7 Pittsburgh National Team, further expanding his experience in player development and offensive strategy.

In 2015, Hudgins transitioned to the collegiate ranks at Dakota College of Bottineau, coaching quarterbacks and running backs. His versatility and ability to elevate multiple position groups became a hallmark of his coaching style. He later moved to Hiram College, where he coached running backs during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, producing a First Team NCAC selection in 2016.

Hudgins continued his ascent at Central State University beginning in 2018, coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers. His players earned First Team SIAC honors in both 2018 and 2021, reflecting his commitment to technical development and competitive excellence.

At Fayetteville State, Hudgins oversaw one of the most productive receiving units in the CIAA. In 2024, the Broncos' receivers totaled 2,146 yards on 183 receptions, averaging 11.73 yards per catch and scoring 13 touchdowns. The group averaged 238.44 receiving yards per game, significantly outpacing their opponents. Key contributors included Mali Harris-Strayhorn (456 yards, 3 TDs), David Baros (408 yards), and Kameron King (340 yards, 3 TDs).

In 2023, Hudgins guided the receiving corps to 1,676 yards on 145 receptions with 11 touchdowns, highlighted by standout performances from Treveran Goode (350 yards), Baros (275 yards), and Nigel Fitzgerald (3 TDs). His emphasis on precision, route discipline, and situational awareness played a central role in the unit's year-over-year growth.

A Pittsburgh native, Hudgins was an All-City quarterback at Perry High School before continuing his career at Central State University. He served as the starting quarterback for the Marauders in 2011 and 2012, demonstrating leadership, poise, and a deep understanding of offensive football.

Hudgins earned his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from Central State University. He later completed a Master's Degree in Sports Administration from Concordia University of Texas, strengthening his foundation in program leadership and athletic operations.

"James Hudgins brings an exceptional eye for talent and a proven ability to develop student-athletes," said head coach Boby Rome II. "As our first Recruiting Coordinator, he will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Chicago State football."
Hudgins' extensive coaching background, recruiting acumen, and commitment to player development position him as a foundational leader as Chicago State continues to build its football identity.
