Chicago State Downs New Haven for Second Straight Win

Cougars Win Back to Back Games for the First Time in Program History

WEST HAVEN, CT - The Chicago State University women's soccer team made history on Thursday by winning their second straight game by defeating the New Haven Chargers by a score of 3-0. The win marks the first time the Cougars have won back to back games for the first time in program history. The Cougars dominated from start to finish on both ends of the field. The offense had 24 shot attempts, with 14 being on goal. Both are season highs. The Cougars had three different goal scorers, including a first goal of the season by one of the goal scorers.

It did not take long for the Cougars to strike as in the seventh minute, Renee Davis took a free kick opportunity and wrapped around the Charger goalkeeper to the top right of the goal to put the Cougars on the board early. Veronika Avila scored in the 33rd minute after two excellent touch passes by Jewel Foreman and Megan Swift to find put Avila in open field to go one on one with the Chargers goalkeeper to give Chicago State a 2-0. The Cougars remained comfortably ahead with a 2-0 lead at halftime. 

The second half saw a short stalemate but in the late stages, graduate student Jacqueline Kambere scored her first goal of the season, and as a Cougar to put Chicago State up 3-0 in the late stages. Aviana Gutierrez made five saves and logged her second shutout win of her young career. 

With the second consecutive win, Chicago State is now 4-7-5 overall and 2-4-2 in the NEC and now has their first winning streak in program history.

Chicago State is will stay out east and make the trip to Loretto, Pennsylvania to take on Saint Francis University on Sunday October 26 with kickoff from Stoakes Soccerplex at 11:00 AM (CT).
