Chicago State Men’s Tennis Drop 4-3 Decision to IUPUI

Box Score Chicago State men's tennis picked up singles wins from Pedro Alvarez, Rodrigo Alves and Zak Radziwillowicz but it wasn't enough as IUPUI won the doubles point and three singles matches for a 4-3 win Sunday at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood. Each of the three Cougars victories were win straight sets as Alvarez earned his 11th consecutive victory but two-three set losses cost them the win.

"Overall, we played singles very well but it was the same thing as yesterday," head coach Jack Barton said. "We played not to lose and we lost. Max (Sandoval) was up 5-2 in the second set and lost 7-6. Percy (Siercke) played well, but didn't play brave enough in the third set. In some points, he had great momentum and didn't take advantage, didn't play with confidence that he earned when he won the second set.

"We played well enough to be considered a competitive team but, right now, we don't have that effect that other teams feel they can lose to us. It starts with us and a belief that we can and will win. It's not lip service, it has to come from trusting ourselves and executing when the opportunities present themselves. We just have to be more brave.

"It's tough to lose matches like we have the last two days. To work as hard as we do to get better and make changes, and we play with fear when it's time to use the tools we have worked so hard to enhance. I think a lot of this team and I just hope they get to the point where their expectations are higher than mine and anyone else's."

Next up, the Cougars will play their first Horizon League road matches of the season, traveling to Youngstown, Ohio to face Youngstown State on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m. at the YSU Tennis Center then will face Cleveland State on Sunday, March 24 at 9 a.m. at the Medical Mutual Tennis Center in Cleveland.
