The Chicago State women's volleyball extended host West Virginia to a fifth and deciding set Saturday in Morgantown, WV and suffered a 3-2 loss with a 15-11 fifth-set defeat.
Yanlis Feliz led in kills with a game-high 18, while Maria Lopez added eight and
Wiktoria Zagumny racked up 35 assists.
First Set - West Virginia 25, Chicago State 19
? The Mountaineers earned the first point of the match before the Cougars struck back with a 3-1 run with kills from Feliz and
Berenice Almeyda to lead 3-2
? West Virginia retaliated with a 6-1 run of their own to lead 8-4
? Chicago State attempted several runs yet the Mountaineers maintained their lead to seal the win at 25-19
Second Set - Chicago State 25, West Virginia 23
? The Cougars struck first due to a service error from West Virginia to go up 1-0
? West Virginia then answered back with a 4-2 run to take the lead at 4-3
? Chicago State then bounced back with a run of their own, this one at 6-1 with kills from
Julieta Sandez and Lopez to retake the lead at 9-5
? Despite the lead, the Mountaineers managed to rally back and force a 21-21 tie in which the Cougars retook momentum, closing out the set with a 4-2 run to seal the victory and tie it up at 1-1
Third Set - West Virginia, 25, Chicago State 18
? Chicago State continued their streak and opened up the set with a 4-1 run after two attack errors by the Mountaineers, along with a service ace from Lopez and a kill by Feliz
? West Virginia then answered with a 7-2 run to now lead 8-6
? Chicago State managed to cut the run with a kill from Sandez, yet the Mountaineers rallied again with a 5-1 run to gain momentum and lead 13-8
? The Mountaineers took this momentum and sealed the win with a 25-18 score to now lead in sets, 2-1
Fourth Set - Chicago State 27, West Virginia 25
? The Mountaineers once again opened up the scoring with a 1-0 lead due to an attack error by the Cougars
? Chicago State then went on a 2-0 run with a kill from Feliz and a service error from West Virginia to take the lead at 2-1
? West Virginia managed to rally with a run of 4-1 to retake the lead at 5-3
? Chicago State then bounced back after several errors by West Virginia, along with a kill from Feliz, to lead 9-6 after a 6-1 run
? The Mountaineers managed to come back and tie the match, this time at 25-25Â
? The Cougars managed to seal the victory at 27-25 after two straight errors from the Mountaineers which tied it all up at 2-2, forcing a fifth and final set
Fifth Set - West Virginia 15, Chicago State 11
? West Virginia opened up the set with a 5-1 run to lead very early on
? The Mountaineers took this lead up to 11-5, when the Cougars retaliated with a 4-0 run which featured a kill from Almeyda to now only trail by two, 11-9
? The Mountaineers did not back down and answered back with a 4-2 run to take the set win at 15-11 and win the match after a five-set thriller, 3-2
