Cougars Women’s Golf Claim Top Spot at Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship

Darinka Velazquez Finishes Second Overall to Lead Chicago State to Victory

The Chicago State women's golf team earned the wire-to-wire victory at the 28th Annual National Women's Collegiate Golf Championship presented by Arcis Golf and organized by the Women In Golf Foundation, Inc. (WIGF) at Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Georgia. The Cougars shot a two-round total 656 for a 38-stroke victory over second place Savannah State (694) in the three-team field. Paine College took third with a 741. Each of the four CSU golfers finished in the top 10, led by Darinka Velazquez who finished second with a 161, followed by Montserrat Ramirez (7th, 169), Koranis Boonmadee (T8, 171) and Faith McKinney (10, 172).

The Cougars will bring home a trophy named in honor of Renee Powell, who was the second ever African American woman to play on the LPGA Tour, has a dorm named after her at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and is a 2022 inductee of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The women's golf team will wrap up the 2023 season May 8-10 at the PGA Works Championship at Shoal Creek Club in Birmingham, Alabama.
