Cougars Volleyball Wrap Up 2023 Season with 3-0 Loss at Florida State

Box Score The Chicago State volleyball team closed out their most successful run in the Division I era with a 3-0 loss to Florida State Friday night at Tully Gymnasium in Tallahassee, Florida. Four Cougars seniors closed out their career delivering a program best 39 wins over the past four seasons including Mesalina Severino, who led the team in blocks in each of the last three seasons and leaves CSU as the all-time leader in blocks and Yanlis Feliz, who was named an AVCA All-American in 2021, becoming the first AVCA All-American in Chicago State history and is the first All-American for the university since 1987. She was also the 2021 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, named to the 2021 All-Western Athletic Conference First Team and hammered 540 kills, the most in Chicago State history, fifth-most in NCAA Division I and most in the WAC. She will leave Chicago State as the all-time leader in many offensive categories, including kills

In tonight's match, Feliz led all players with 14 kills and Patrycja Lagida added five. Feliz and Wiktoria Zagumny shared the team lead in digs with seven while Zagumny led all players with 26 assists.

Set 1 -  Florida State 25, Chicago State 22
-Florida State jumped out to a 3-0 and 8-2 lead with the only Cougars scoring during the Seminoles run coming from kills from Yanlis Feliz and Wiktoria Zagumny
-The Seminoles increased the margin to 10-3 following a kill from Julieta Sandez then the Cougars chipped away scoring four of the next five on kills by Patrycja Lagida, Feliz and Berenice Almeyda along with an FSU service error and the margin was three, 12-9
-The teams traded a pair of 3-0 runs when, with the Cougars trailing 17-13, pulled within two on an attack error and Almeyda kill and it was 17-15
-The Seminoles increased the margin to 22-16 when CSU benefitted from a pair of FSU attack errors and a Feliz kill to pull within 22-19
-Chicago State pulled within two following two FSU errors and it was 23-21 and the Cougar managed to stave off one set point but lost 25-22

Set 2 -  Florida State 25, Chicago State 21
-The second set started much the same as the first with FSU reeling off the first six points and increasing that to 10-1 with the only disruption a Feliz kill
-The Cougars scored a pair on an error and Lagida kill and another on a service error to trail 13-4
-CSU rallied with a run of 10 of the next 12 points starting with a Lagida kill and ace, followed by a two FSU attack errors and a pair of Feliz kills and the rally left CSU trailing by just one, 15-14
-FSU won three of the next four to go back by three, 18-15
-Another Lagida kill and FSU attack error brought the Cougars within one again, 18-17
-The Noles went on another run, this time winning four of five to go up four, 22-18
-The Cougars wouldn't go quietly, winning the next two to trail 22-20 before FSU pushed the set to set point and CSU staved off one set point before a Seminoles kill closed the set 25-21

Set 3 -  Florida State 25, Chicago State 16
-The Seminoles jumped out to a 4-1 and 6-2 lead with the Cougars coming from an Almeyda kill and FSU attack error
-The Cougars rallied, scoring three of the next four highlighted by two Sandez kills and CSU cut the lead to two, 7-5
-FSU then reeled off eight of the next 10 to go up 15-7, CSU points coming from an attack error and Feliz kill
-CSU took advantage of four errors and Feliz kill to pull within four, 16-12
-The teams then exchanged two FSU points against one for the Cougars the rest away of the way and the Seminoles inched away for a third-set 25-16 win and 3-0 match victory
