Box Score The Chicago State volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over the Evansville Purple Aces Monday at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. Monday's matchup was the third meeting between the two teams with the Cougars earning 3-0 victories in both prior meetings (Sept. 15 in Knoxville, 25-20, 25-20, 25-13; Sept. 25 in Evansville, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18).
Yanlis Feliz led the Cougars with 11 kills while
Berenice Almeyda and
Mesalina Severino added 10 apiece.
Julieta Sandez led in digs with 19 and
Wiktoria Zagumny had 38 assists.
Next up for the Cougars will be a pair of back-to-back road matches, first taking on New Mexico State in Las Cruces on Monday, October 30 then UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Tuesday, October 31.
Set 1 - Â Evansville 25, Chicago State 21
-The teams traded points until 7-7 when Evansville went on a 6-1 run to jump out to a five-point lead, 13-8
-The Cougars then scored three of the next four on a
Yanlis Feliz block assist, a
Berenice Almeyda service ace and a
Mesalina Severino kill to pull within three, 14-11
-The Purple Aces maintained another run, this time 6-2, to go up 20-13
-Chicago State rallied, on kills by
Whitney Barnes, a block assist by Almeyda, kills by Feliz,
Wiktoria Zagumny to pull with four, 21-17
-Following an Aces point, Feliz had a kill, Almeyda served an ace and an attack error left the score at 22-20
-The teams traded points then Evansville closed out the set with a service ace and an attack error for the 25-21 win
Set 2 - Â Chicago State 25, Evansville 21
-Chicago State jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held that margin for most of the set
-Consecutive kills by
Julieta Sandez and two by Barnes increased the lead to 9-4
-Following an Aces point, Chicago State won four of the next five on a Feliz kill, Almeyda block assist and a service and attack error to go up 13-6
-The teams exchanged a pair of points when Evansville reeled off four consecutive points to pull within three, 15-12
-CSU then scored three of four on two Almeyda kills and one by Barnes to go back up five, 18-13
-With the Cougars leading 21-15, Evansville reeled off six consecutive points to knot the set at 21-21
-Chicago State responded and stopped the run with a Severino kill followed by a Feliz kill and an attack error set up set point where Severino had a block and the Cougars won set two 25-21
Set 3 - Â Chicago State 25, Evansville 20
-Evansville jumped out to a quick start to open the third set, earning the first two points and four of the first six before the Cougars reeled off six consecutive points on a pair of attack errors, a
Andrea Calderon service ace, a pair of kills by Maria Lopez Torres and an Almeyda block assist to go up 8-4
-The Aces then won four of the next five to put within one, 9-8
-Chicago State was leading 14-11 when Evansville won five of six points to take a 16-15 lead
-Tied 17-17, the Cougars went on two separate three-point run interrupted by an Aces point to go up 23-18
-Evansville managed a pair of points before a service error set up set point and Feliz finished the set with a kill for the 25-20 win
Set 4 - Â Chicago State 25, Evansville 16
-The Cougars jumped out to a commanding lead in the clinching set, scoring the first five points and 10 and of the first 12 to lead 10-2
-The teams traded a pair of points before CSU reeled off six in a row to extend the lead to 19-5
-Evansville rallied and scored four of the next five to make it 20-9 before a
Mesalina Severino kill made it 21-9
-The Aces then scored five in a row to cut the deficit to 21-14
-
Julieta Sandez stopped the run with a kill and an Aces service error made it 22-15
-CSU scored a pair of points but the Aces staved off one set point before a Sandez kill finished off the set and match
