Elijah Weaver led four Cougars players in double figure scoring with a season and career high 26 points in an 85-82 loss to former WAC foe UTRGV Saturday night in Edinburg, Texas at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. UTRGV broke open a close game with an 11-0 run midway through the second half and the Cougars trailed by nine around the five-minute mark and cut the gap to two on two occasions but the Vaqueros made their free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Joining Weaver with double-digit scoring was
Jahsean Corbett with 21 who converted a season-high five three-point field goals, Wesley Cardet with 14 and
Brent Davis with 10.Â
Chicago State will stay on the road but will have nine days off before playing again, traveling to Conway, S.C., to face Coastal Carolina on Monday, January 23 at 6 p.m.
1st Half - UTRGV 35, Chicago State 31
Elijah Weaver opened the scoring in the game with a layup at the 18:21 mark
UTRGV scored on their next possession en route to a 7-0 run and led 7-2 with 15:13 remaining in the half
Wesley Cardet stopped the run with a layup with the Vaqueros continued the run, extending the lead to 12-4 following a three and a layup
Weaver scored again and
Jahsean Corbett nailed a three on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to three, 12-9, seven minutes into the game
Following a UTRGV score, Corbett hit his second three to cut the lead to two, 14-12
Bryce Johnson then converted from beyond the arc and Chicago State led for the first time since the opening score, 15-14 at the 11:42 mark
UTRGV reclaimed the lead on their next possession but Corbett then hit his third three of the half and the Cougars led again, 18-16
Brent Davis then got into the scoring column and CSU went up four, 20-16, at the 10:21 mark
UTRGV converted a pair of free throws before Weaver hit a three and CSU led 23-18
The teams exchanged a pair of lone free throws then UTRGV hit a three and trailed by two, 24-22, at the 6:36 mark
The Vaqueros knotted the score with two free throws and it was 24-24 with 5:35 left until half
Arol Kacuol dunked and UTRGV knotted the score with two free throws before UTRGV went on a 7-1 to lead 33-27 at the 2:59 mark
The Cougars closed the half with a modest 4-2 run to trail by four at the half, 35-31
2nd Half - Chicago State 51, UTRGV 50
CSU cut the lead to one on a Corbett three to start the second half
Following a UTRGV layup,
Brent Davis hit a three and the score was tied 37-37 with 19 minutes remaining to play
The teams exchanged hoops and were tied three times when Weaver hit a three and CSU led 44-43 with 16:47 remaining
At that point, UTRGV went on an 11-0 run and CSU failed to score during the three-minute spurt and were left playing catch up for the remainder of the game, trailing 54-44 with 14:02 remaining in regulation
The Cougars pulled to within four, 57-53, Â following a Kacuol dunk but a quick but a quick 6-0 UTRGV run and the lead was back up to 10, 63-53
Trailing by nine, 71-62, Corbett hit a three, UTRGV hit a layup followed by a Cardet bucket and Weaver three and the UTRGV lead was just three, 73-70, with 5:01 left to play in regulation
The lead would stay in that range until Weaver hit a layup with 33 seconds remaining and the Vaqueros led 80-78Â
UTRGV hit five free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
