Bryce Johnson Scores a Game-High 21 Points in 73-63 Loss at Tarleton State

Johnson Hits 5-of-6 Three Point Field Goals

Tarleton State shot 56 percent in the first half against 35 percent for Chicago State and the Texans rode a 13-point halftime lead to a 73-63 victory over the Cougars Wednesday night in Stephenville, Texas. The former Western Athletic Conference foes increased the lead to as many as 22 points in the second half but a 14-2 Cougars run led by three Bryce Johnson's three pointers help cut the lead to 10 and cut the gap to nine on two occasions but Tarleton State made their free throws down the stretch and held on for the 10-point win.

Bryce Johnson led three Cougars players in double figures with 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting including 5-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc. Wesley Cardet added 15 Elijah Weaver 10 while Jahsean Corbett led all players with 15 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.

Chicago State will stay on the road and face another former WAC foe on Saturday, January 14, traveling to Edinburg, Texas to face UTRGV at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The Vaqueros enter the week with an 8-8 record including 0-4 in the WAC. UTRGV is 7-2 at home this year. 

1st Half - Tarleton State 37, Chicago State 24
Tarleton State scored the first 10 points of the game and Chicago State didn't score for the first 3:12 before Brent Davis hit a three and it was 10-3 at the 16:48 mark
The Texans reeled off the next five and led by 12, 15-3
Bryce Johnson hit a three for the Cougars and Wesley Cardet converted a layup following an offensive rebound and the lead was seven, 15-8, with 12:19 remaining in the half
Tarleton State went on a 7-2 run with the only CSU scoring coming on a pair of Davis free throws and it was 22-10 at the 8:19 mark
The teams exchanged baskets before an Elijah Weaver three cut the gap to 11, 28-17, with 4:22 until the half
The Texans made a jumper and a three and the lead was 16 before Wesley Cardet hit a free throw and another made jumper and Tarleton State had their largest lead of the half, 17 points, at the 1:44 mark
Chicago State closed the half with a 6-0 run on a pair of baskets by Cardet and a pair of Davis free throws and the Texans led 37-24 at the half

2nd Half - Chicago State 39, Tarleton State 36
Tarleton started the scoring in the second half as well scoring four of the first six points to go up 15, 41-26
Following a pair of made Corbett free throws, the Texans went on a 7-0 extending to a 9-2 run for their largest lead of the game, 20 points, at 48-28 and 50-30
The teams exchanged scores and the Texans lead was 22 at the 9:17 mark
At that point, Cardet made a pull up jumper and Bryce Johnson made three straight three pointers as part of a 14-2 run and the lead was just 10 with 5:46 remaining to play
The Texans then reeled off a 7-2 run and the lead was 15, 67-52, with 2:50 left
Bryce Johnson then hit his fifth three of the half followed by two Johnson free throws and the lead was back to 10, 67-57, with 1:17 remaining in regulation
Following a Texans free throw, Wesley Cardet grabbed an offensive rebound and scored and the lead was under double digits, 68-59, with under a minute remaining
The Texans made five free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
