Chicago State women's basketball begins its final homestand of the season by hosting California Baptist on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center. Here's how to watch, follow and attend.
COVID Protocols: Face Coverings and Social Distancing will be implemented during athletically related activities to prevent transmission and prevent outbreaks, per Chicago State University policy.
ALL-TIME CBU is 7-0 all time against the Cougars, having won in Riverside on Jan. 8 of this season, 73-60, keyed by freshman Trinity San Antonio's 24 points. Quentarra Mitchell scored a team-high 21 points for Chicago State in the loss. Wednesday's battle is the teams' first Chicago meeting since Jan. 22, 2020, an 80-65 CBU win.
LAST TIME OUT Chicago State fizzled late and fell, 80-71, at New Mexico State in a road clash on Saturday at the Pan American Center.
Aaliyah Collins led the Cougars with 20 points on 10-of-10 free-throw shooting, while Janiah Newell and Christina Britter both scored 12 points. Laura Segues added seven points. Chicago State was tied at 34 at halftime, but the Aggies turned up the offensive pressure in half two and glided to the win.
SIZING UP THE LANCERS After a perfect WAC season in 2020-21, the Lancers have returned their core in 2021-22, including Ane Olaeta, Britney Thomas and Caitlyn Harper. Olaeta is the conference's top assister with over seven per game, while Harper's 18.3 points per game lead all scorers. The 20-7 Lancers last took down Utah Valley, 84-59, on Saturday at home.
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks seventh in the WAC) with 14.5 points per game, and her 2.5 steals per game rank fourth in the league, an average that ranks 27th in NCAA Division I. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Collins earned the first USBWA Freshman of the Week honor for a WAC student-athlete and the first for a mid-major player since Nov. 2019. Collins has also been named WAC Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most ever for a Chicago State basketball player, men's or women's.
