ALL-TIME Chicago State and Stephen F. Austin have only met once, a 51-42 CSU win on November 23, 2001 at a tournament in Auburn, Alahama.
LAST TIME OUT The Cougars fell to Abilene Christian on Monday afternoon, 75-52. Freshman phenom Aaliyah Collins powered the Cougars with 21 points, her seventh game with 20 or more, while Quentarra Mitchell tallied 15. But the Cougars' offense sputtered, shooting 0-for-12 from behind the arc in the loss. Abilene Christian, meanwhile, shot at a 41 percent clip from three-point land.
SIZING UP THE LUMBERJACKS Stephen F. Austin boasts a perfect WAC record at 10-0, having won its last 11 games. On Saturday, the Lumberjacks toppled Dixie State, 81-54, with Aiyana Johnson racking up 25 points and 13 boards. SFA's stifling defense allows only 54.8 points per game, while opponents shoot under 30 percent from three. Including Johnson, SFA boasts four double digit scorers.
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks third in the WAC) with 16.1 points per game, and her 2.9 steals per game lead the league, an average that ranks 12th in NCAA Division I. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Collins earned the first USBWA Freshman of the Week honor for a WAC student-athlete and the first for a mid-major player since Nov. 2019. Collins has also been named WAC Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most ever for a Chicago State basketball player, men's or women's.
