WHAT'S HAPPENING After toppling Tarleton, 58-48, for its second consecutive home win, Chicago State women's basketball welcomes in Abilene Christian for a Monday matinee..
ALL-TIME Chicago State and Abilene Christian have never met, as the Wildcats just joined the WAC this season.
LAST TIME OUT The Cougars took down Tarleton, 58-48, to win their second consecutive home game on Saturday. Aaliyah Collins powered the Cougars with 14 points, while Janiah Newell and Allysah Boothe each poured in double figures, with Boothe knocking in four threes. The Cougars started the third quarter on a 16-3 run and never allowed the Texans to climb back to within one possession, winning comfortably by the final buzzer.
SIZING UP THE WILDCATS Veteran head coach Julie Goodenough has the Wildcats at 14-8 with a 6-5 conference record. The Wildcats are the WAC's second highest scoring team and second most efficient three-point shooting team, led by Jamie Bonnarens, Maddie Miller and sharpshooting guard Kamryn Mraz. The Wildcats are just 2-5 on the road, however, and last fell to UTRGV, 82-62, on Saturday, with Bonnarens scoring 20 points.
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks third in the WAC) with 15.7 points per game, and her 2.8 steals per game lead the league, an average that ranks 14th in NCAA Division I. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Collins earned the first USBWA Freshman of the Week honor for a WAC student-athlete and the first for a mid-major player since Nov. 2019. Collins has also been named WAC Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most ever for a Chicago State basketball player, men's or women's.
