WHAT'S HAPPENING After losses in back-to-back road games Chicago State women's basketball returns home to host Tarleton State for the second consecutive season.
ALL-TIME Chicago State and Tarleton have only played twice, both last February in Chicago. The Texans won, 64-56 and 61-41, in back-to-back games on Feb. 13 and 14.
LAST TIME OUT The Cougars fell to Dixie State on Saturday, a game in which Aaliyah Collins poured in 22 points, her sixth game with 20 or more points. Kyjai Miles also added 14 points and seven boards in the loss. The Cougars were within four points of Dixie State at the two-minute mark of the third quarter, but a hard-charging Trailblazers squad closed strong for the double-digit victory.
SIZING UP THE TEXANS Head coach Misty Wilson's team is in its second WAC season, bringing in a 12-9 (4-6 WAC) record and a two-game losing streak to Chicago. Iyana Dorsey leads the Texans in scoring, with 10.5 points per game, while Tarleton also boasts WAC blocks leader Seynabou Thiam, who swats 2.7 shots per game. The Texans have the second-best scoring defense in the conference, allowing just over 56 points per game.Â
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks third in the WAC) with 15.9 points per game, and her 2.9 steals per game lead the league, an average that ranks 14th in NCAA Division I. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Collins earned the first USBWA Freshman of the Week honor for a WAC student-athlete and the first for a mid-major player since Nov. 2019. Collins has also been named WAC Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most ever for a Chicago State basketball player, men's or women's.
