WHAT'S HAPPENING Chicago State women's returns to Texas on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. as it faces Tarleton for the second time in two weeks.
ALL-TIME Chicago State and Tarleton have met three times, with Tarleton winning two of three matchups. Most recently, CSU took down the Texans, 58-48 on February 5 in Chicago. Last February in Chicago, the Texans won, 64-56 and 61-41, in back-to-back games on Feb. 13 and 14. This is the first meeting all-time in Stephenville.
LAST TIME OUT The The Chicago State women's basketball team (4-18, 3-10 WAC) dropped it's matchup with Stephen F. Austin, 73-49, Wednesday at the Jones Convocation Center. Janiah Newell powered the Cougars with a team-high 18 points, while Quentarra Mitchell scored seven points. Kyjai Miles added six, and Aaliyah Collins dropped in five. As a team, the Cougars out rebounded the Ladyjacks, but SFA's 24 forced turnovers sealed the win.
SIZING UP THE TEXANS Head coach Misty Wilson's team is in its second WAC season and enters 5-7 in conference. Iyana Dorsey leads the Texans in scoring, with 10.3 points per game, while Tarleton also boasts WAC blocks leader Seynabou Thiam, who swats 2.8 shots per game. The Texans have the second-best scoring defense in the conference, allowing just over 58 points per game.
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks sixth in the WAC) with 14.6 points per game, and her 2.6 steals per game rank third the league, an average that ranks 21st in NCAA Division I. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Collins earned the first USBWA Freshman of the Week honor for a WAC student-athlete and the first for a mid-major player since Nov. 2019. Collins has also been named WAC Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most ever for a Chicago State basketball player, men's or women's.
