WHAT'S HAPPENING After falling in back-to-back games during its Texas roadtrip, Chicago State women's basketball hits the home hardwood to take on Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center. It's the two teams' second meeting in six days.
ALL-TIME The overall series is tied at one game apiece. Chicago State and Stephen F. Austin have only met twice, most recently an 84-55 SFA win on Feb. 10 of this season. Beforehand, CSU tallied a 51-42 CSU win on November 23, 2001 at a tournament in Auburn, Alabama.
LAST TIME OUT The Cougars last fell to Sam Houston, 61-58, Saturday in a conference road contest. In a thrilling game, the teams were tied, 57-57 with 2:35 left, with Sam Houston closing strong for the win. Taylor Norris led the Cougars in scoring and rebounding, as the freshman piled up a career-high 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ana Haklicka added 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Quentarra Mitchell scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.
SIZING UP THE LUMBERJACKS Stephen F. Austin boasts a perfect WAC record at 12-0, having won its last 13 games. SFA's stifling defense allows only 54.8 points per game, while opponents shoot under 30 percent from three. Including Johnson, SFA boasts four double digit scorers.
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks fifth in the WAC) with 15.1 points per game, and her 2.7 steals per game lead the league, an average that ranks 16th in NCAA Division I. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Collins earned the first USBWA Freshman of the Week honor for a WAC student-athlete and the first for a mid-major player since Nov. 2019. Collins has also been named WAC Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most ever for a Chicago State basketball player, men's or women's.
