WHAT'S HAPPENING Chicago State women's basketball continues its Texas two-step, facing Sam Houston on Saturday afternoon in Huntsville.
ALL-TIME Chicago State and Sam Houston have never met. This will be the first all-time meeting between the programs.
LAST TIME OUT The Cougars fell to 20-win Stephen F. Austin, 84-55, on Thursday. Quentarra Mitchell and Allysah Boothe each scored 12 points, but the Cougars committed 27 turnovers in the loss, a game in which the Lumberjacks led wire-to-wire for the 29-point victory.
SIZING UP THE BEARKATS Sam Houston enters the clash riding a five-game win streak, which comes on the heels of losing six games in a row from Jan. 8 to Jan. 22. The 10-12 Bearkats are lead by head coach Ravon Justice, the 2019 Southland Conference Coach of the Year. Surging Sam Houston is led by sharpshooting guard Faith Cook, who scores 15.2 points per game. Madelyn Batista anchors the paint for the Bearkats, as she averages nearly a double-double at 12.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Sam Houston last took down Utah Valley, 69-66, Saturday in Orem, Utah.
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks third in the WAC) with 15.6 points per game, and her 2.8 steals per game lead the league, an average that ranks 15th in NCAA Division I. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Collins earned the first USBWA Freshman of the Week honor for a WAC student-athlete and the first for a mid-major player since Nov. 2019. Collins has also been named WAC Freshman of the Week five times this season, the most ever for a Chicago State basketball player, men's or women's.
