Cougars Men’s Basketball Rides Hot Start to 87-74 Win Over Valparaiso

CSU Improves to 2-0 at Home to Start a Season for the Second Year in a Row

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team made 9-of-12 first half three pointers and went into the halftime locker room with a 25-point lead and rode the momentum to an 87-74 victory over Valparaiso Wednesday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.  

Chicago State had five scorers in double figures led by Wesley Cardet with 24. Elijah Weaver had 16, Deshawn Jean-Charles with 14, Brent Davis with 11 and Bryce Johnson with 10. Jahsean Corbett led the Cougars with eight rebounds and he contributed eight points. Cardet was 12-of-12 from the line and 5-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the three-point arc.

1st Half 
Chicago State starts the game with an 8-0 run on two threes by Elijah Weaver, two free throws by Brent Davis
Valparaiso responded to the slow start with an 8-2 run to pull within two, 10-8
The game of runs continues with Cougars with a 15-2 spurt to go up 27-12
Following a Valpo score, CSU with a 7-0 run for the game's largest lead, 20, 34-14
Leading 38-21, the Cougars convert three three pointers on consecutive trips to extend the lead to 23, 47-24
CSU caps the half with a pair of free throws and go into the halftime locker room leading 49-24
Chicago State converts 9-of-12 three pointers and out-rebound Valpo 17-5

2nd Half 
11-2 Valpo run to start the second half to cut the lead to 16, 51-35
Cougars score four consecutive from the free throw line, lead 55-38 with 15:53 remaining
Momentum returns to the CSU side, two free throws and two layups move the lead back to 20, 61-41
10-0 Valpo run snapped by a Jahsean Corbett layup but the lead is 14, 65-51
After cutting the lead to 12, Chicago State goes on an 9-2 run to go back up 19, 76-57
Valpo cuts the lead to 11 with 1:11 remaining to play but CSU makes their free throws down the stretch to win by 13, 87-74

Following two games at home, the Chicago State men's basketball team will play their first of five consecutive road games at Kent, Ohio on Saturday, November 19 at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center against Kent State. The Golden Flash have jumped out to a 2-0 record with home games against Portland (Monday) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Wednesday) before welcoming the Cougars to town. The Cougars and Golden Flash have only met one other time in their series history, a 92-63 Kent State win on November 16, 2012.

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
